I am a avid reader of Jeff Atwood's blog Coding Horror (such a great name, I have to admit I'm jealous of it) and on his latest post On Our Project, We're Always 90% Done he is recommending a management book to read.  The book is Behind Closed Doors: Secrets of Great Management. Of course my first thought was Great Management??? you have to be kidding me right, isn't that a oxymoron? So after i picked my jaw up off my desk I proceeded to read his post about it. I do have to say it got me interested, I have not been lucky enough in my career to work with any managers I would consider good. Some of them were smart and hard working but that does not equate out to a good or dare I say a great manager. It still stings me to put those words together. Well the book was only seventeen dollars so I got it since Jeff is usually pretty on with his recommendations. I started reading it a yesterday and I am already one third through the book. I have to admit that it does seem like it is worth it. Even though I am not currently a manager it has given me some good insight on ways to improve how I plan and interact with other people at work. I also have to admit that a manager that did what is in this book would be a good possibly great manager. Still hurts typing that. So if you are management, plan to move into it, just want some good managerial knowledge (hrm that one hurts as well) try the book out, its pretty good.
